Breakthrough Technology for Producing Hydrogen Directly from Water Unveiled at Dhaka’s Novo Theatre

Dhaka, September 16: Researchers from the Hydrogen Energy and CO₂ Conversion Lab have showcased a groundbreaking project to produce hydrogen fuel directly from water at the Bangladesh Innovation Fair 2026.

The three-day exhibition, organised by the Ministry of Science and Technology at Dhaka’s Novo Theatre, aims to bridge the gap between academic research and the practical needs of the commercial market.

Led by Associate Professor Dr Aminul Islam, the research project focuses on developing technology for the direct production of hydrogen from water. The researchers say the technology could offer a potential solution to future energy challenges and contribute to the development of cleaner energy systems.

The technology could also have implications for Bangladesh’s long-term energy security and efforts to reduce dependence on imported energy in the industrial sector.

The laboratory regularly publishes its research findings in Scopus-indexed international journals, reflecting its efforts to maintain scientific standards, strengthen research credibility and address contemporary engineering challenges. These publications are also part of the laboratory’s efforts to advance the technology towards practical applications.

Moving the technology from the laboratory to commercial-scale deployment will require the expansion of its pilot system, assessments of economic viability, improvements in production efficiency and rigorous safety testing. Long-term operational performance and industrial applicability will also need to be evaluated.

The researchers believe that continued development of the technology, along with collaboration between research institutions and industry, could open new opportunities for clean energy production in Bangladesh.
